ITS WHAT WE DO.

What Door size do  I want?  Standard?  Metric?  Imperial?  Bespoke?

Any door can be made to suit an opening  but the more affordable way is the use a standard FD30 door from Joinery suppliers like Howdens. The beauty of Howdens is they come with data sheets guaranteeing the door and its fire fighting properties.

We then look at standard door sizes and how we can make them fit your existing apertures.

Standard FD30 doors from the likes of Howdens come in the following imperial widths of 2 Foot (610mm), 2 foot 3 Inches (686mm), 2 foot 6 inches (762mm), 2 foot 9 inches (838mm) and 3 foot (915mm)

They also supply metric door sizes which come in the following widths of 626mm, 726mm, 826mm and 926mm.  These doors come at a standard height of 2040mm, where as the Imperial doors come at a height of 6 foot 6 inches (1981mm)

Armed with these sizes it’s a case of seeing if we can make a door fit. There is a small lipping on either side of the door giving approximately a half inch of play to scribe the door into the opening.

Doors can be altered by Pasprotec and certificated accordingly. This alteration generally comes by ripping off the factory fitted lippings and replaced with a thicker hardwood lip to both sides of the door.

Occasionally the height of the door frame is too high, this is common in Victorian houses where the height of the doors are close to 7 foot tall.

This problem can be rectified by fixing a false head to the frame to allow a standard door size to be used to swing under the timber fixed into the frame above.

Another door size found in Georgian houses are a 2 foot 8 door width that comes at a standard height of 6 foot 8 inches. That translates to 810mm x 2032mm. These doors are made as a ‘One off standard’ by Howdens which has proved a useful alternative over the years and saved expensive alterations to make another size suit.

Standard door linings are generally acceptable to be re-used with an FD30 door. The only exception would be MDF door linings which have been used, albeit rarely.

Most of the door frames fitted from the early 60s have been using the imperial sized doors. Bedrooms generally being 2 foot 6, bathrooms and airing cupboards at 2 foot 3 and main entrance doors are generally 2 foot 9. All of these are at the standard 6 foot 6 high height opening. In most cases these linings are fine to be re-used for your new Fire door.
